Faces at the U.I Grand Mosque Itikaf.

Itikaf is the seclusion of oneself in the mosque for the sole purpose of worshiping Allah. Especially in the last ten days of Ramadhan, Muslim faithful converge in central mosques to perform this sacred act of worship. The University of Ibadan central mosque in conjunction with the Muslim student’s Society of Nigeria (M.S.S.N) gives a platform for Muslims across the Nation to perform this rewarding act of worship every year. Mutakif is one who is on Itikaf.
The welfare of the Mutakif was of concern to me and I decided to dialogue with some of them. This is what they have to say.

This is Adesila Muhammad Awwal, whose is a post graduate student (2nd degree), an attendant of itikaf for the fifth time in the University of Ibadan central mosque. He not only commended the organizers for the events well programmed but also prayed for them. He emphasized on the health care service provided for the Mutakif. While chatting with him, he mentioned that he had completed the Quran over and over again, which he couldn’t do when not on Itikaf.

Meek Muslim also interviewed an artisan on Itikaf, Adeniyan Samad. He was motivated and sponsored to the itikaf. Being his first time, he expressed his excitements for being a part of the Itikaf. He imagined a whole lot of things he could have missed not coming for the Itikaf. In his advice, he mentioned that parents should make their children learn the religion as that will help them throughout their life. He also sent a commendation to the organizers.

A young lad was spotted reciting the Holy Quran by the right side of the mosque, he is named AbdKareem Abdwaduud. He was on Itikaf because he had read a lot about itikaf and its benefits and he cannot afford missing these bounties.
AbdulWaduud.

He highly praises the organizers for breaking the barrier of his expectations. However, Waduud made an observation that non Mutakif were not always given proper attention regarding their iftar food, and encouraged the organizers to improve on this aspect

AbdulWaasi Ibrahim, leaning against the wall reciting the Quran explains while chatting with him that Itikaf requires devotion and total submission to Allah’s injunctions. He stressed that this is a period of forgiveness. He encouraged fellow Mutakif and non Mutakif to take these last 10 days seriously and take advantage of the benefits there-in.

He also prayed and commended the organizers. However, he encouraged them to always fumigate the mosque environment to prevent mosquitos and other harmful insect from causing infections to the Mutakif.

Lastly I met a sister under a shed, also glancing through the pages of the Quran. Sis. Kifayat said she enjoyed every bit of the Itikaf ranging from the tafsir, tahajud, personal prayers to the cleaning of the mosque environ every morning and meeting new people. she however expressed her displeasure to the poor response to the complaints put forth by the Mutakif, even though she rated the organizers high.

This has been the atmosphere at the Itikaf session, Ramadhan 1437AH at the grand Mosque University of Ibadan, Nigeria.
